Picsearch provides image search to community-powered search engines – Swickis

Eurekster using Picsearch technology to offer image search

June 13, 2007

It was announced today that San Francisco based Eurekster, Inc. is using Picsearch to enhance their innovative community-powered, social search platform called Swicki. A Swicki is a search engine that allows any online publisher or end user to create deep, focused search engines and BuzzClouds (TM) on topics they care about enabling community engagement while driving better user experiences, page views and revenue.

“We are constantly seeking best of breed index providers when it comes to relevancy, coverage and freshness. That’s why we have chosen Picsearch as a partner in providing image search.”

Steven Marder, CEO & co-founder of Eurekster, said “People using a Swicki expect to get relevant, high quality results including a blend of web, blog, image and paid search results. We are constantly seeking best of breed index providers when it comes to relevancy, coverage and freshness. That’s why we have chosen Picsearch as a partner in providing image search.”

Swickis are usually implemented on a branded corporate website, a specialized vertical or local site or on a blog. Each Swicki collects information about which results users found to be most useful and dynamically re-ranks them according to proprietary behavioral algorithms increasing the relevance and value for the community of site visitors, site publishers and advertisers. Social search adds a new layer of relevance by using what other people found as interesting and topical while they are within that group or community. The difference in relevancy can be easily be compared making a search for the famous table tennis player “Waldner” on Picsearch and a search on the table tennis swicki http://world-table-tennis-swicki.eurekster.com/waldner/. A swicki limits the number of results and shows only the images relevant for the users of that specific community.

Robert Risberg, Picsearch’s CEO said “The success of Swickis is part of the general trend towards specialization of search services. The Swicki finds results by consulting the links and sites that a user’s friends and colleagues find useful. Personalization is a big step towards producing better search results.”

Approximately 11 percent of all searches on the Internet are image searches (Hitwise November 2006). Picsearch is the second largest image search provider in the world and has over 1.7 billion searchable images. Every month, several million new images are added to the service. Picsearch has, since its inception, strived for relevancy and family friendliness. High relevancy helps the user to find the image they are looking for. Family friendliness allows children to surf in safety as offensive material is filtered out by advanced filtering systems.
